The board shortlist gets shorter too, and that one bites harder. Every vendor's back-connect line is a subset of their normal range, usually the mid and upper tiers, so a build that would have taken an entry-level B650 now starts higher.
Resale thins out on the board rather than the case. A BTF or Project Zero board appeals only to a buyer who also owns a compatible chassis, and that is a small pool. The case itself sells normally, because it still takes a conventional board.
That asymmetry is the actual buying advice. A back-connect case accepts a standard board; a standard case rejects a back-connect board. If you are not sure you will commit to the platform, buy the chassis that supports both and decide the board later.
Bottom line
If you want one case that fits whichever back-connect board you end up with, buy the Corsair Frame 4000D RS ARGB. If your board is already an ASUS BTF, the TUF Gaming GT302 ARGB arrives with more fan than anything near it. FAQ
Do back-connect motherboards need a special case?
Yes. The connectors sit on the underside of the board, so the tray needs cutouts in matching positions and enough depth behind it for the plugs. A standard ATX case has neither and the board will not seat. Case makers publish validation lists naming ASUS BTF, MSI Project Zero and GIGABYTE Project Stealth; if a chassis never mentions rear-connector support, assume it does not have it. Everything else in the build is unaffected, because CPU, GPU, cooler, RAM and PSU support is identical to a normal board.
Will a normal ATX motherboard still fit in a back-connect case?
It will. The cutouts are additive, so a back-connect chassis keeps the standard standoff pattern and the usual routing holes alongside the new ones. That makes the case the low-risk half of the decision: buy a back-connect case, then choose a conventional board, and nothing is wasted. The reverse does not hold. A back-connect board in a standard case is a non-starter, which is why picking the chassis that supports both is the safe move when the platform plan is not settled.
Is an ASUS BTF board compatible with an MSI Project Zero case?
Often, but the vendors do not promise it. Cases sold by a board vendor usually validate their own standard only. If your case maker names your board standard, you are covered.
