The number on the box moves less than the box wants you to think. GamersNexus measured the 9700X at 380 FPS average in F1 24 at 1080p on DDR5-6000, and 400 FPS on DDR5-6400, a 5 percent gain. In the same review, Dragon's Dogma 2 showed nothing from the same bump.

That is the honest shape of memory scaling on Zen 5. It is game-dependent, single-digit, and only available if your specific chip holds 1:1 at 6400, which takes a manual fabric clock bump and is not guaranteed. DDR5-6000 is guaranteed. How we picked

Start with the ratio. AM5 runs the memory controller clock in lockstep with the memory clock up to DDR5-6000, and that 1:1 mode is where platform latency is lowest. Push past it and the controller can fall back to a half-rate mode that adds translation latency to every access. DDR5-6000 CL30 is the floor on AM5, not the ceiling, and it is the speed AMD guarantees at 1:1, so every kit on this page sits there. Then measure. A 44mm module and a 140mm tower cooler fight over the same space, and the usual fix is sliding the cooler's front fan up until it fouls the side panel. Is DDR5-6400 worth it over DDR5-6000 on a 9700X?

Usually not, and never reliably. GamersNexus measured about 5 percent in F1 24 at 1080p going from 6000 to 6400 on a 9700X, and no meaningful change in Dragon's Dogma 2. Zen 5 can hold 1:1 at 6400, but it takes a manual fabric clock bump and depends on your specific chip. If you enjoy BIOS work and you already own a 6400 kit, try it. If you are buying today and want the machine finished when you close the case, buy 6000 CL30.

Do I need EXPO RAM, or will an XMP kit work on the 9700X?
