Three of those sit in different spec sheets and the fourth only matters once the cooler is hanging over your memory. The GPU side of the same problem works the same way, with length and slot depth standing in for height and fan position. The difference is that case makers get the GPU number right more often.
Why the spec sheet number is often wrong

The margin is not superstition. A 3.5mm error against a cooler you bought with 2mm to spare is a return. Ten millimetres of headroom absorbs a bad spec sheet, a thick side panel gasket, and the few millimetres a fan moves when you slide it up to clear memory.
If the cooler you want lands within a few millimetres of your case's ceiling, measure before you buy. It takes five minutes and it is the only number on this page that is definitely about your build.
The second axis nobody tables: RAM height under the fan
Case clearance is vertical. The other constraint is horizontal, and it is the one that bites hardest. A tower cooler's fin stack and front fan hang out over the first DIMM slot. If your memory is taller than the gap under that fan, the module does not seat.
Standard-height DDR5 runs 32mm to 34mm at the top of the heat spreader. Kits with sculpted spreaders and light diffusers reach 44mm to 50mm. Most dual towers publish a RAM clearance figure between 35mm and 45mm, which puts the tall kits on the wrong side of the line.
There is an escape hatch and it costs you the thing you were protecting. Slide the front fan up the fin stack and the memory clears. Total cooler height rises by the same distance, so a 154mm cooler with a raised fan is closer to 158mm and the case margin is gone. When you are tight on both axes, buy the memory around the cooler. How we measure CPU cooler clearance
You need a ruler and the side panel off.
- Lay the case on its side with the motherboard tray flat and the open side facing up.
- Rest the ruler on the CPU socket area of the board, or on the tray itself if the board is not in yet. Note which one you used. That choice is exactly what makes vendor numbers disagree.
- Measure straight up to the inside face of the side panel, not the outer frame. A glass panel on a rubber gasket sits lower than the frame suggests.
